View Full Version : Which is best? Lookout or Avast

lol http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif they do like to put the fear of god into us, it seems the AV software makers are the only ones who seem to think there is a major threat to our smartphones via malware and viruses .
I haven't had my android phone long but when I got it the first thing I did was look into security for it, I read endless reports and articles online from various sources and websites , and all but one said antivirus software was not necessary for android devices.
But in saying that alot of antivirus apps for android have built in anti theft which ( if it actually works and is set up correctly ) could prove very useful. Which leads me to my question in 'Best Free Security and Privacy for Android' guide on the site it mentions Antivirus Free - Lookout and avast! Mobile Security which is the best of the 2 ? any opinions would be great. I already have the Prey app because I already used it on my laptop so it made sense to me to install it on my phone too, but I also would like a sort off back-up anti-theft app with anti-virus just to be on the save side.
Any opinions, thoughts or advice would be greatly received, thank-you.

Juxxize, I had to move your post to this new thread, because, although your post was related to the thread in which posted previously, but it's still a different topic altogether, as you are asking for suggestions about antivirus.

Antivirus on Android is necessary... because there are malware on Android. It's only natural, considering it's one of the most used mobile platform.

Reading the review here :

I feel that Avast! is the better choice, considering your requirements.

Lookout is good, and as said in the review, it's one of the earliest antivirus for Android.. so in terms of malware detection, and removal, it's good, but in terms of other features, it lags behind other free antivirus.

It does not have a privacy advisor, and does not scan the web too I think. Plus, the anti-theft features too are less than what Avast offers. Plus, there is the high memory usage.

In terms of features available, Avast has a upper hand.
And although, a rooted device is required to access the full features of firewall, and anti-theft, but still, the anti-theft features offered for a non-rooted device seem sufficient enough.

Plus, it has a web shield, and sms/call filtering. Also, it has a privacy advisor, which will be helpful for you.

So, go for Avast is my suggestion. I personally use Avast on both PC and Android, and am quite happy with it. I will advise to install an antivirus first, and then, install other apps, as it will keep you safe.

Also, install apps from the Google Play store only, and not from other sites, because there are other sites offering apps too, but only few of them can be trusted. Apart from the Google Play store, the home site of the software can be trusted too, but only after seeing the WOT ratings and such. Most of the sites link back to the play store for downloading of app anyways. Some sites do offer .apk file separately though, which is good in case you do not have internet on the phone.

thank-you so much again http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/images/smilies/smile.gif ( it's like i have my own adviser in you, because you have helped me out alot just lately so thank-you )
I had had looked for reviews for android AV but not found them so thanks for posting the links , i must have missed them when i was looking for them.
I have only been using google play for downloaded apps and I've only downloaded a couple of apps, as you know i like to really research stuff before i download them, but it's always worth mentioning it in forum posts because other people see them and it's very good advice for them to follow.
I should have divided my post into 2 parts sorry if i keep on making work for you http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/images/smilies/redface.gif
I'd still be interested in hearing other people's thoughts and opinions and hopefully other people will find the thread useful too. thanks again for your reply http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

You are welcome http://www.techsupportalert.com/freeware-forum/images/smilies/smile.gif .. and no worries about other things.

As for Android articles on the site, you can find the list here :

The link can also be accessed from the main site. It's in the drop down list of tab marked as "MOBILE APPS", on the top of the page, where the menu is, along with other tabs.

I personally really like Lookout. I've used it for a couple years now and I've never had an issue with it.

A couple months ago, I had an opportunity to actually utilize it's "locate" service. I lost my phone while at a conference in Chicago. I was able to login to their website and locate where my phone was. It wasn't perfect, but it was close enough that I was able to retrieve my phone. So, I'm sold on Lookout.
