I often make posters or notices. for my wife's bowling club. and I make them up as I go along but they are not the best.
is there a programme I can use that will help me make them look more professional.

In the past I have used RonyaSoft Poster Designer (http://www.ronyasoft.com/products/poster-forge/) and Printer (http://www.ronyasoft.com/products/proposter/) for this and liked the results, it is not free...

GIMP might also be helpful, it's an open source and free equivalent of photoshop so can do some pretty advanced image editing. It might be helpful to you for this. Another tip i would give you is when trying to make something look professional stick to a limited range of colours, choose a combination of a few colours that look good together and then don't have any other colours in the final design except those few.
