View Full Version : Windows 8.1 and Ralink RT3290

Let me start by saying and make this clear: This is NOT a bash Windows 8.1 thread! Ok, now that it is out of the way, this is a heads up for anyone running into this problem. On a brand new HP Envy desktop, a Ralink RT3290 wireless adapter was installed. It would cause the computer to BSOD during the Windows 8.1 upgrade and revert back to Windows 8.

Now, the only way to get the Windows 8.1 upgrade to install is to remove the card completely. There is no updated driver for this card that works either. Once the card is removed, everything works. If it is reinstalled after the upgrade, the machine does a BSOD and never boots correctly. This is a straight up driver issue with no resolution at this time other than to remove the card completely. Fortunately, it is not going to be used in the desktop computer anyways.

Hope this helps someone save some time and frustration. Hardware producers need to get on the ball a bit better by the looks of it. After all, there is going to be a new Windows version every year from here on out. (Windows 8.1 is not a service pack.)

thanks for sharing your experience..and hope of saving someone else the pain of troubleshooting this issue!

Thanks for the information. Unfortunately I tried to update with different configurations 5 times before I found this, plus a lengthy chat session with HP. They told me to disable the Ralink RT3290 and try the update, didn't work. Looks like we'll be waiting for an updated driver, crazy considering I bought this notebook brand new 4 days ago and it won't run the latest OS.

Thanks again for the information.
