Can anybody recommend any photo editing freeware that has alpha blur? (This makes the edges of an image very soft, while maintaining sharpness inside.)

Supposedly you can add plug ins to Paint, but I'm not sure they're compatible with Windows 7.

Would you please be more specific, you need to soften the edges of a selected object i.e its corners. Or just the external framework of the whole picture like to have a rectangle with rounded corner and blurred edges?

It could be done in GIMP, but I'm not sure if there is an automated way or if it would need to be done manually. It has functions built in to fade out the edges while leaving the middle sharp, but the fact you use the word "alpha" means I suspect you want an alpha channel transparency in the faded region, you mght ahve to do this bit manually, it could be done by fading out to a colour like bright green(or anything else which doesn't appear in the image), then putting an alpha channle into the image, selecting by colour the bright green and deleting it to leave an alpha channel at the edges.

If this site would allow us to post images, I could show you.

It doesn't require multiple steps, just irregular crop and then apply blur.

Of course, Alpha blur had multiple definitions in graphic arts.

K6567 is right, that is what you are looking for.

Paint.Net is free

I would suggest BoltBait's Selection Tools:

Did you extract the files into the effects folder?

I am checking for the latest update.

After installing plugins you must restart paint.net
